Bettina Wyngaard – author of the Foreword
I could hear the pain in the stories I read
An attorney, activist and author, I obtained my BA and LLB degrees from Stellenbosch University. My legal work and activism is focused on women’s rights, with a special interest on gender-based violence. My debut novel, Troos vir die Gebrokenes, won the prestigious Jan Rabie/Rapport award for innovative writing in Afrikaans in 2010. My second novel, Vuilspel and my third, Slaafs, were published in 2013 and 2016 respectively. I have also contributed to two anthologies, Op die Spoor Van and Adam Small: Denker, Digter, Dramaturg, both published in 2017. The same year my radio drama, Tweede Kanse, was broadcast on RSG. My fourth novel Jagter will be published in February 2019. I write a weekly opinion piece for Litnet.

Dr. Johan Myburg: translator of the text from English to Afrikaans
Translation is expression, intention, perception and expectation
After working for many years as an arts journalist and arts editor at an Afrikaans newspaper I am currently freelancing as writer, copy editor and translator.
My latest volume of poetry, Uittogboek, was published in 2017 by Protea and was awarded the ATKV Poetry Award as well as the Hertzog Prize for Poetry. My first volume, Vlugskrif, was published in 1984, followed by Kontrafak ten years later in 1994. This second volume was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize for Literature. Kamermusiek was published in 2008.
Some of my poetry has been included in various anthologies of Afrikaans poetry and in translation in In a Burning Sea, an anthology of Afrikaans poetry translated into English and edited by Marlise Joubert.
